Aunt Jess

One role I take the most pride in is being an aunt. Anderson Lee, my nephew, is just over a year old and he is my absolute best friend. When I am home, there are many occupations I participate in that are just a part of the job. He can not care for himself and Aunt Jess is the first pick and a free babysitter. He loves watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and nap time in the recliner. Anderson is very busy and we always play with his many toys when I visit. A few tasks include participation in tossing the ball back and forth and rolling his car while he rides and holds on.

The wife would have a great deal of hindrance in her occupational performance due to the loss of multiple fingers on her hand. On the hand she reached out to grab the key with, she only had one finger and a thumb still attached.  If an individual is missing these phalanges they will have difficulty performing most grips and pinches altogether. A few specific occupations she would struggle with might include, cutting up vegetables or fruit. When you slice a tomato, for example, you normally use a spherical grip and stabilize the tomato with one hand and hold the knife with a power grip. Both of these actions typically involve all of the fingers and would be harder for the wife to perform. She would also not be able to do household chores such as folding laundry or washing dishes as effectively as someone with all five digits on both hands. Assistive Devices

Just like a pair of shoes or clothing, people who need assistive equipment should have the appropriate size and fit for their device. Having crutches, a cane, or walker that is too tall for a client would just be uncomfortable for them. If the height is not right, posture, balance, and stability could all be affected in a negative manner.  However, if the fit is just right, it can help people perform tasks that they could not before and be a very helpful tool. The adjustment of all the following devices are very simple. In order to correctly adjust the height of the cane, you must find the greater trochanter and make sure that the patient is holding the cane on the opposite of the affected lower extremity. Another landmark to look for is the wrist crease or the ulnar styloid with the arms down by the side. Throughout my education and this program my thoughts on what it takes to be an effective leader have evolved and changed. You do not have to be some top gun in the spotlight to be a leader that changes lives. Many people who have the greatest influence on others do not even see themself as a leader.
