Walk, Ride, Rodeo

For this neuro note, I watched the movie Walk, Ride, Rodeo. This movie is based on a true story about a 19 year old girl, Amberley, who is an award winning barrel racer in rodeo competitions. Right before she was set to start college and advance her rodeo career, she was involved in a terrible car accident that resulted in her T-12 vertebrae being crushed. Amberley was diagnosed with an incomplete spinal cord injury and lost all function, movement, and sensation in her legs. Of course, as a 19 year old athlete, this was a hard adjustment for her and she faced many obstacles on her journey to learning her new normal. Her attitude in therapy was not the most positive, but, after weeks of improvement she gave a lot of credit to the therapist and began to have a more optimistic approach in her rehab.

She battled many wars with herself and had many days where she wanted to give up and even mentioned she wished she would have died in the crash. Her mother said to her, "This chair will either be your wings or it will be your anchor, you decide." After this happened in the movie, I feel like something in Amberley was ignited and failure was no longer an option. She had altered her dreams and goals since her wreck, but this was a motivator to go for bigger things again because she was still capable. She was quoted stating, "We don't always get to choose what happens to us, but we do choose what we do next." After a difficult road and hard work, she got back on the horse and started competing again. It only took her four months after her accident to saddle a horse again.  She even competed in one of the biggest barrel racing competitions in the country, the American. The real Amberley performed her own stunts for the filming of the movie along with the actual horse that she has been riding throughout her journey, Power. Through this inspiring movie you are able to first hand watch a difficult journey turn into beautiful outcomes. She was able to do most everything she had done before, including drive with assistive technology.
